Week 1

Class topics (lecture)

  • Cell Cycle: Discovering mechanisms
  • Modeling: a process of investigation.

Lab (computers):

  • Hands on introduction of modeling tool (Stella): cell cycle model(s).
Concept mapping cell-cycle system statements and creating rate equations in Stella.
Week2

Class time:

  • Respond to lab reports from previous week.

Lab time:

  • Begin group projects on modeling the group cell cycle system.
  • Address the following in an initial project proposal to be turned in next period:
    • What is the question to be investigated with the model?
    • What data do you need from current research?
  • Full instructions for the research paper to be written are provided.
Readings for Weeks 1 and 2:
  • Cell Cycle chapters 1 and 2 of The Cell Cycle by Murray and Hunt, 1993
  • Introduction to Modeling and Cell Cycle in A Cell Biologist's Guide to Modeling and Bioinformatics.by Holmes, 2007.
Student Presentations:

Select topic for presentation on mathematical model.

  • Mathematical model topics are not the same as the cell cycle projects.
  • Students select a topic from a provided list i.e. drosophila pattern formation, vesicular transport, tissue morphogenesis.
